The best London locations for a photoshoot (and when to go)

London is one of the most photogenic cities in the world, but the difference between a good shoot and a great one is usually when you go, not just where. These are the spots I suggest most often for a photoshoot day, with a few tips for each.
Notting Hill
The pastel houses around Portobello Road, Lancaster Road and the little mews streets are the classic London backdrop for a reason. Soft colours flatter almost every skin tone and pair beautifully with a natural or soft glam look.
When to go: early on a weekday morning. By late morning, especially on Saturdays when the market is on, the most famous streets are busy. Remember that these are people's homes: we keep off doorsteps and keep the noise down.
South Bank & Westminster
Walking from Westminster Bridge towards the London Eye gives you the Thames, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in one route. It's perfect if you want photos that say "London" at first glance.
When to go: sunrise or the hour before sunset. Golden hour light on the river is warm and soft, and it's the time when the bridges are quietest.
St Paul's & Millennium Bridge
The view of St Paul's Cathedral from the Millennium Bridge gives strong lines and a grand, timeless feel. It suits fuller glam and bolder outfits.
When to go: weekends are calmer in the City than weekdays, when office workers fill the streets at lunchtime.
Covent Garden
Market arches, flower installations and boutique shopfronts make Covent Garden great for a playful, colourful shoot, and the covered market is a lifesaver on a rainy day.
When to go: before 10am. It gets very busy from midday onwards.
South Kensington & Mayfair
If you love an elegant, "old money" look, the white stucco terraces of South Kensington and the polished black doors and mews of Mayfair are ideal. They're also calmer than the big tourist spots, which helps if you're new to posing.
Shoreditch
For a cooler, urban mood, the street art around Brick Lane and Shoreditch changes all the time, so every shoot looks different. Bold makeup and street style work well here.
A few general tips
- Light matters more than the location. An ordinary street in golden hour looks better than a famous landmark at harsh midday.
- Bring two or three outfits for longer shoots. Solid colours and soft textures photograph best.
- Comfortable shoes for walking between spots, and something nice to change into for the photos.
- Some places have rules. The Royal Parks and private estates have their own rules for professional photography, so I always suggest spots that work for personal shoots.
